Conscious Sedation
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation is an innovative anesthetic technique designed to simultaneously reduce anxiety and pain. This procedure is recommended for patients who do not feel "comfortable" undergoing any dental procedure and is essential for patients with phobias or panic attacks. It is also crucial for performing dental procedures on uncooperative children or individuals with disabilities.

How is sedation performed?

Sedation is administered by our anesthesiologists through intravenous medication. In particular cases (e.g., for children), the medication can be administered via the gastrointestinal route (using drops or aerosol). Sedation can be performed on adults, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Where is the sedation performed?

Unlike many other local healthcare facilities, we are able to perform conscious sedation in our two operating rooms, authorized by the Provincial Health Authority of Ragusa.

Throughout the procedure, the patient's vital parameters are continuously monitored:

  • Heart rate;
  • Respiratory rate;
  • Blood pressure;
  • Oxygen saturation;
  • Airway patency.

Any emergency can be managed by our expert anesthesiologist, who has access to all the emergency equipment typically found in a hospital operating room.

The medications used for anesthesia and sedation

For any surgical operation, local anesthetics (mepivacaine, articaine, bupivacaine, etc.) are always used. The medications used for sedation are additional substances that help alleviate fear, reduce pain perception, and provide post-operative amnesia.

The ideal medications for sedation are benzodiazepines (e.g., Midazolam). In combination with these, during the procedure, the anesthesiologist can administer painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications to ensure a smoother post-operative recovery for the patient.

Is conscious sedation risky?

Absolutely not. This simple anesthetic procedure is very safe and non-invasive, as it does not induce total anesthesia. During the procedure, you will still be able to respond to the dentist’s requests, such as opening or closing your mouth. Conscious sedation is therefore very beneficial as it is safe and highly effective.

How long does the effect of conscious sedation last?

The sedative effect of these medications lasts for about 20-40 minutes in the patient, with the possibility of prolonging it with additional micro-doses during the procedure to maintain sedation even for up to 2-hour surgeries.

Furthermore, no overnight hospitalization is required; you can return home after about 1 hour. You only need to come fasting and be accompanied, as driving a vehicle is not permitted after conscious sedation.

Our specialist in dental anesthesia

Dr. Giuseppe Piazzese has been specializing in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation since 1979, and in Respiratory Physiopathology and Physiokinetics since 1983. He has over 40 years of experience as an anesthesiologist in various hospitals and private clinics in the Ragusa province.

Conscious Sedation: Treatment Prices

The use of sedation requires a small supplement to the cost of the surgical procedure due to the high cost of the medications used and the presence of a qualified anesthesiologist for the entire duration of the procedure.
