Maxillofacial surgery is the medical and surgical discipline specialized in the treatment of diseases related to the mouth, jaws, mandible, face, neck, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Maxillofacial Visit: When is Surgery Necessary?
Maxillofacial surgery is required when we identify conditions in the head-face-mouth-neck complex
that do not fall under the expertise of the Oral Surgeon. Here are some of these cases:
-
Orthognathic surgery (correction of skeletal malocclusions);
-
Surgery of the tongue, palate, and soft tissues of the mouth;
-
Temporomandibular joint arthroscopy and mandibular joint surgery;
-
Surgery of inflammatory conditions of the maxillary bones, face, and paranasal sinuses (e.g., maxillary sinus);
-
Trauma surgery of facial bones and the soft tissues overlying them;
-
Correction of congenital malformations and deformities of the maxillary bones and face (e.g., cleft lip and palate, odontogenic cysts);
-
Surgery of the ocular orbit (malformative, traumatic, oncological, aesthetic);
-
Aesthetic surgery of the face (e.g., rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, malaroplasty, mentoplasty, facelift);
-
Reconstructive bone surgery of the maxillaries and facial skeleton;
-
Osteogenic distraction of facial and maxillary bones;
-
Microvascular reconstructive surgery of bones, soft tissues, and nerves with vascularized grafts from other body regions (free flaps).
